Determining the Experiences of Distance Learning Instructors as Related to Stress Experienced and Unique Coping Abilities

Distance learning graduate education is growing exponentially. In the past fifteen years, there has been a 40% increase in the number of graduate course and programs offered online. Yet, research has not examined if instructor stress and coping requirements differ between online and traditional teaching formats. This exploratory study looked to see if differences existed. The independent variables were the type of instructor and gender. The dependent variables were the scores from the PF-SOC and OSI-R. An online demographic questionnaire, Occupational Stress Inventory (OSI-R) and Problem-Focused Style of Coping (PF-SOC) were completed by 160 graduate distant and traditional instructors. The data analysis included both descriptive and inferential statistics (t tests and MANOVA). This study showed no significant statistical differences in these two types of instructors, except for traditional graduate instructors showing an increase in hypothesis two.
